A Note on the Models
The 3D model recreations were first drawn in CorelDraw, usually by tracing schematics or other illustrations. Model component templates in the form of bezier shapes were exported to RayDream Design Studio (later into its successor Carrara) for construction. Most components were produced in the Free Form (later renamed Spline) Modeler. Typically the hull was built from a cross-section with a bezier extrusion envelope. Some simpler parts are based on shape primitives. The finished RayDream models were exported in MetaStream format. Most are scratch-built, quick and dirty constructions with minimum details and no textures, designed for small file size and fast loading. Others, like the Gustav Zédé model, were pared down from more elaborate, textured versions with the same constraints in mind. A few of the MTS models show artifacts of construction, especially on the hull amidships, but still give a good impression of their 3D appearance. Selecting the wire frame display option from the MetaStream menu won’t reveal anything about the design’s interior, but might give insight to the model construction process. The later models were built and animated in Carrara with the animation exported as an image sequence. These are reanimated in the popup using a script originated by
Oleg Pomoshnikov. Many of the models are presented completely as graphics provided me courtesy of the designers without any modeling by me.| Comments and questions are welcome. E-mail me. |
